
Dr. William Mackey taught Black history and culture for more than two decades, connecting current events with historical context in weekly lectures. A World War II Army veteran who served as an interpreter of French and Italian, he later earned a degree in structural engineering in New York City and worked on school and office building design. During his student years he became acquainted with Shirley Graham and W.E.B. Du Bois, who encouraged his historical studies.
